Mental health in students after COVID and impact on communication skills with view to employment

Improving confidence in students to enable them to have the necessary communication skills to move on to employment. Having the necessary skills to communicate effectively with clients in their college setting to ensure they are ready for synoptic exam.

About the project

What is the project about?

This would fit into industry updating by giving students the skills that employers are looking for. Preparing them after the Coronavius pandemic to have the skills to communicate with employers giving the best chance to gain employment.

The white paper states “To give ourselves the best chance of success we must make sure everyone has the skills which will allow them to get good jobs, both now and in the future. It is our mission to make sure that opportunity is there for everyone, wherever they live, to level up every inch of the county.”

I intend to measure the impact of my project by collecting data from employers who have students carry out a placement within the salon and if this has led to meaningful employment.

The data I will use will be Google forms and will have structured questions aimed at employers. These will include questions to identify employers needs for their business and skills needed for life.

I will measure impact by having a meeting with employers structured like a forum.

Aims and desirable outcomes

What is the project currently achieving?

Alison Delves on what is happening

I will collect data on how many students gained meaningful employment pre lockdown and make a comparison to post lockdown. Students are showing a lack of communication skills that are needed within industry. MH is a huge factor in this with anxiety at the forefront. Communication is a vital part of hairdressing and without this key element students will struggle to be able to achieve their full potential with a salon environment.

I will set tasks for students to build confidence. Working with a group called Future Female who are an organisation that helps build confidence.

Future female will be involved from the start to carry out some workshops.

Local salons will be involved once the students have had workshops.

I will collate information and write a report on findings.

Week 1 – Collect data pre Covid

Week 2 – Speak to employers

Week 3 – Invite Future Female to carry out workshops with
students.

Week 4 – Students will be working on skills to improve
communication with clients.

Week 4 – 8 Work with employers sending out google forms and
collecting data from this.

Week 5-9 working with students to ensure project is working
with communication skills and clients/ employers.

Week 10 – 14 gather data from employers ready for conference.
