The implementation of an effective peer observation programmes in an FE college

Improved sharing of good practice among delivery staff and an improvement in TLA - this would potentially relate to learners across curriculum areas and at all levels. Project led by Diane Malinowski.

About the project

What is the project about?

My main areas of focus for this research project will be:

  1. Conduct research into peer observation programmes within other FE colleges. This will include research into the specific models that are in place and how meaningfully teachers engage with the programmes.
  2. To conduct a brief review of current literature and research on the topic of peer observations.
  3. To undertake research within the college group to gain an understanding of current attitudes towards peer observation among teachers. I want to find out if teachers see the benefits of such schemes and also what features within a scheme that would make them motivated to engage within the process. For example, if teachers would prefer peer observations to have an agreed focus before the observation took place and how they would like to give/receive feedback. It may be that teachers would prefer to work with other teachers from within their areas of specialism or from other curriculum areas across college.

To combine all three research elements to form the basis of a peer observation scheme for our college group.

What is the benefit to students?

The benefit to students would come through improved sharing of good practice among delivery staff and an improvement in TLA – this would potentially relate to learners across curriculum areas and at all levels.

How will the impact of the project be measured?

The impact of the project will be measured through the successful implementation of a peer observation scheme within the group. Initially I anticipate that this would be piloted on a smaller scale. Success will be measured through participation and feedback received on the impact of peer observations.

What will the outcome be?

  • implementation of a pilot peer observation programme
  • Roll out of the scheme more broadly across the college group
